Ours is a wonderful world. The Earth has been established with built-in systems that enable it to periodically and miraculously renew itself through cycles -- the seasonal cycle, the water cycle, even the cycle of day and night during which earthlings engage in living activities in the day, then retreat into restoring sleep in the night, to be ready for yet another day.
Even the atmosphere is naturally renewed daily. Early academic education have taught us that the atmosphere is composed of various gases, including nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and rare gases mixed in a certain proportion, but the essential element in air that is responsible for life on Earth turns out to be..the negative ion.
Nature replenishes the earth with biologically active negative ions through breakdown of traces of radioactive rock on the earth crust, lightning, rolling surfs, cosmic rays, waterfalls and UV light. Besides providing living organisms with our vital breath, these small negatively charged air particles also attach themselves to air contaminants to sweep them out of the atmosphere.
But land in our cities is covered with asphalt and concrete, which prevents the normal generation of ions. Air pollution further depletes our supply of negative ions. Consequently, our man-made technology-rich environment has changed our natural air and even severely impaired the ability of the earth to renew itself.
While much of our attention is drawn to the immediate and dramatic action of the known toxic components of polluted air, such as smoke, haze, poisonous vehicle emissions, sulphur dioxide and the components of cigarette smoke, the reduction of small ion content in the atmosphere, though not immediately obvious, is of serious consequence to plants, animals and people.
